School Match Savings Program

Due to the fact that school is not free in Haiti (even the government school require students to buy books and uniforms and supplies), we had a lot of parents coming to us asking for us to pay for their children’s school tuition. Because Invest Hope believes in giving a “hand-up” and not a “hand-out”, we looked for a program to help parents send their children to school. One type of approach we found that has been successful in other poverty stricken countries is a “savings match” program.

Through this empowering program, parents deposit funds into an account throughout the year. At the end of that year Invest Hope doubles their money enabling them to be able to pay for the child’s schooling and supplies. This has proven to be a very popular and successful program with the families we work with.

We have confidence in this program because the responsibility rests on the parents with Invest Hope helping alleviate the burden of school expense. This is one of the ways we are trying to promote independence instead of fostering dependence.
